The power of the breath: Left & Right nostril breathing
Our life is intricately connected to our breath. The way we breathe influences our emotions, thoughts, and actions, shaping our karmic path. The Shivaswarodaya Shastra states that we breathe through one nostril at any given point in time, around every 1.5 hours, the dominant nostril switchesEach nostril corresponds to a specific energy channel or Nadi. The right nostril is associated with the pingala nadi representing the solar or masculine energy. It is dynamic, stimulates the body and is connected to the Sun. Pranic forces are stronger when the right flows while the mental aspect becomes less dominant. The pingala nadi governs the organs of action, such as speech, hands, feet, reproductive organs, excretory organs and is responsible for rational, analytical, and mathematical ability.Exercising, decision making, eating, going out there and making things happen are recommended when the right flowsPingala is connected to the left hemisphere of the brain.Conversely, the left nostril is associated with the ida nadi, expresses the lunar or feminine energy. It is calming, cooling, and connected to the Moon. When the left flows, it stimulates the mental faculties, manas shakti is stimulated & pranic energy becomes weak.Active Ida indicates introversion & creativity.Thinking, contemplating, & creative activities are recommended when the left flows.Ida is connected to the right hemisphere of the brain.During the transition, when both right & left nostrils become active for a few minutes, the balanced flow of prana through both the ida and pingala nadis allows the integration of opposing solar and lunar energies in both sides of the body, harmonizing the qualities of feminine and masculine energies within us, awakens the force of sushumna nadi, the central channel, allowing the mind to attain a balanced calm swara called shoonya (void) swara, making it an ideal time for meditation
